D23 Announcements That Got the Most Buzz in August 2019

Every couple of years, the internet is a buzz with new announcements coming out of the Walt Disney Company. The rumor mills grind to a halt as Disney gives the official word of what is next for the company. Everything from the Disney Wish joining Disney’s Cruise Line fleet to a new international multi-park Marvel land got big reveals.  These D23 announcements have generated a lot of buzz on the internet, over anticipated announcements like Avengers Campus, or Disney’s newest cruise ship.

The UK Pavilion

The rumor mill would have it that Brazil was the next World Showcase Pavilion to get press. Disney news sites even mapped out the location. Instead, no mention came out about a new pavilion. What Disney told us instead was shocking, as it was one of those D23 announcements that had losttraction among news sites. That news was of a Mary Poppins ride in the United Kingdom Pavilion. Not only did Disney confirm that the attraction is coming, but they also announced a Cherry Tree Lane expansion, which promises to be a new immersive experience for guests heading to the new ride.

New Future World Overhaul

The North Side of Epcot is getting the most attention, but the construction is about a lot more than green areas and updated aesthetics. The new Epcot will no longer be worlds divided. Instead, a unified theme brings cohesion to the transformation.

The center of the park will become a permanent hub for the International Festivals that occur throughout the year. World Celebration will feature a grand multilevel pavilion as the new festival center. Future World West will become World Nature and receive an expansion that includes a Moana walkthrough attraction. Future World East will become World Discovery and will consist of a new Play Pavilion, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and a space-themed table service restaurant. Epcot as a whole will become EPCOT and visitors over the next couple of years can see the plans at the Odyssey Center in the park.

Disney Genie

This is one of the most significant D23 announcements and the most surprising of all. Disney is hard at work, making an even better vacation planning app to streamline further your experience of creating and building an itinerary. The app will make recommendations based on interest and optimize your schedule so you can do more with your time. In addition to planning, Disney Genie will also make real-time suggestions. The app has no release date, but Disney says it will be ready in 2020.

The Mandalorian and new Star Wars on Disney+

The Mandalorian is a big hit with Disney and Star Wars fans, so far. This could be the Lucasfilm project that restores balance to the force. Disney also announced an Obi-Wan series, which was a surprise, considering Disney cancelled the Obi-Wan film less than a year ago. Not a lot of information came out about Ben Kenobi’s retooling, but the Mandalorian trailer appears to be right on the money. Disney also announced that Disney+ wouldn’t stream original content. Instead, they’ll release episodes weekly and biweekly.

Future of the MCU

Spider-Man’s removal from future MCU plans was not intended to break just as D23 occurred, but that’s what happened. While we don’t know how much Disney was Banking on Spidey for Phase 4, there were no D23 announcements even hinting at using the character. Instead, we got Phase 4 announcements that include a Black Widow movie, The Eternals, a Doctor Strange Sequel, and Jane Foster as Thor. If you were wondering about the Ten Rings, which date back to the first Iron Man, We’ll also get Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In Television, a host of shows will be coming to Disney+, including She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, What If…, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.
